Brits are looking closer to home when planning their summer holiday and Wirral is proving popular with a massive 358% increase on people searching for hotels in the Borough.

The searches made on the Hotels.com UK site in February 2011 show Wirral is second only to Cromer in Norfolk in the top ten fastest rising holiday destinations since February 2010.

Hotels.com which is owned by the Expedia Group describes Wirral as a 'vibrant urban location' which has seen a greater year on year increase in hotel searches than more established destinations such as St Ives in Cornwall, Belfast in Northern Ireland and Weston-Super-Mare on the south coast.

Jim Wilkie, Interim Chief Executive for Wirral Council said:

“This is a fantastic endorsement of the work we have done to promote Wirral as a place to Play, Eat and Stay in the last few years. The Wirral Year of Food in 2010 gave us a brilliant platform to highlight our burgeoning food tourism scene regionally and nationally and as a Council we are constantly working with our tourism businesses to make sure we are creating the best environment for them to grow.”

“There are some fantastic tourism highlights to look forward to with our Year of Coast and Countryside planned for 2012 and the world's best male and female golfers set to compete again at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Wirral is a beautiful place and this latest news confirms that more and more people want to spend time and discover it for themselves.”
